About this experience
This is the ride you will still be talking about a year from now. Starting from a traditional working ranch on the outskirts of Viana do Castelo, you will be matched with a horse that suits your experience level — from absolute beginner to confident rider — by one of our certified instructors.
The route takes you through the flower fields and pine forests that blanket the foothills above the Lima Valley, with panoramic views that stretch from the Serra d'Arga mountains to the Atlantic. The final stretch follows the coastline: a beach ride at golden hour, the sound of hooves on wet sand, the salt air in your hair.
Every detail is taken care of. We pick you up from your Portugal Active villa, provide all safety equipment, and keep groups small — never more than 8 riders — so that the instructor can give individual attention to every guest. Water, a photo souvenir, and a post-ride refreshment at the ranch are included.
This experience is available year-round, weather permitting. Spring (April to June) is the most spectacular season, when the fields are in full bloom and the light is extraordinary. During bathing season, there are legal restrictions on horseback riding on the beach sand — the route is adapted accordingly with equally stunning coastal trails.

Your private driver collects you from your Portugal Active villa in an air-conditioned vehicle. Sit back and enjoy the scenic drive to Viana do Castelo.

Arrival at the ranch and safety briefing
Meet your certified instructor — Diana, Claudia, or one of our team — at the working ranch. Equipment fitting, safety briefing, and a short orientation in the paddock to get comfortable with your horse.

Mountain trails through flower fields
Set off through the pine forests and flowering meadows that cover the foothills above Viana. Panoramic views of the Lima Valley and the Serra d'Arga mountains. The pace is adapted to the group's level.

Beach ride along the Atlantic
Descend to the coastline and ride along the Atlantic beach. Feel the sea breeze, listen to the waves, and experience the magic of riding on wet sand at the water's edge.

Return to the ranch and refreshments
Back at the ranch, say goodbye to your horse and enjoy refreshments. Your driver will be ready for the transfer back to your villa.

Certified Equestrian Instructors
Diana and Claudia are certified equestrian instructors with over 15 years of combined experience. They grew up riding in the Minho countryside and know every trail, every horse, and every wildflower by name. Their gift is matching riders to horses — they read body language, adapt the pace, and make beginners feel like naturals. The ranch also hosts Laura, several beautifully cared-for Frisian and Lusitano horses, friendly dogs, cats, and even a mini pony.

We collect you directly from your Portugal Active villa. If you prefer to drive yourself, look for a grey gate with an information sign. The VianoEquestre sign is on the block fence — the barn is hidden from the road, down a small driveway.

What is the cancellation policy?

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the experience for a full refund. Cancellations within 24 hours are non-refundable. In case of severe weather, we reschedule or offer a full refund.
Do I need previous riding experience?

Not at all. Our instructors adapt each ride to the group's level. Complete beginners are matched with calm, well-trained horses and given a paddock orientation before the ride.
What happens if it rains?

Light rain will not stop the experience. In case of heavy rain or storms, we will contact you the evening before to reschedule or offer a full refund.
Can my children join?

Children aged 10 and above can ride independently. Younger children may ride with a guide on the same horse by prior arrangement.
Is the villa transfer included?

Villa pickup is optional and can be arranged by our concierge team for an additional fee — contact us for pricing. Pickup from Porto, Braga, or other locations can also be coordinated on request.
Can I ride on the actual beach?

During bathing season (roughly June to September), there are legal restrictions on horseback riding on the beach sand. The route is adapted to equally stunning coastal trails. Outside of bathing season, the beach ride is the full experience.
What is the weight limit?

For the welfare of the horses, the maximum weight is 100 kg per rider.
Is this a private or shared tour?

"Claudia and Diane both were excellent and very friendly guides and teachers. I did two rides with my daughter. Me: zero riding experience; my daughter with a bit of experience. We rode along the shore and partially on the beach where my daughter enjoyed also riding at higher velocity. The landscape is rather rough, cliffy and wild. A true Atlantic experience. The stable is located up in the village and not spectacular. However, Claudia and her team host several very well educated horses there, alongside several friendly dogs, cats and a mini pony. We loved it."
